Let’s just suppose that you did not want to pay your taxes one year…and you simply did not fill out a tax form. Let’s say that you got audited on May 15 on the year after that for which you failed to pay your taxes. “I paid them!” you say, lying to the IRS representative who has shown up at your door.
What do you think would happen next?
a. They will go ahead and take your word for it.
b. They will demand payment immediately.
c. They will throw you in prison if you cannot pay them by some type of deadline.
d. Either answer b or answer c.
Many of you probably laughed or at least grinned when you saw answer a. But based upon the actions and consequences of Former Director of the Exempt Organizations Unit of the Internal Revenue Service (of the United States federal government), any and all Americans who give that very excuse for not paying their taxes should get a pass from jail and not have to pay back anything.
My purpose of this article is to tell you about the Washington Double Standard. No, it is not a bi-weekly newspaper in the state of Washington or Washington, D.C. It is an inconsistency that many Americans either tolerate or wonder how it is allowed to happen.
But back to Lois Lerner! In an effort to get out of facing criminal charges for illegally targeting conservative groups to pay more taxes than other groups of different political leanings, it appears that she had either deleted, removed, or erased e-mails that would have surely incriminated her. Vanished! Into thin air! Poof!
She says she doesn’t know what happened to them!
First of all, I find it extremely hard to believe that our government cannot afford to hire a computer guru to go through every nook and cranny in the computer memory and find those e-mails. Secondly, why is she not in prison when it is clear she broke the law?
I firmly believe that if she is allowed to get away with what she did, all Americans should be able to say on April 15, every year, I have paid my taxes (even though they may not really have done so. If she can get away with lying and not have to go to jail, then we should be afforded that same benefit. After all, the government is supposed to be for the people and by the people. The government is supposed to work for us, after all. If they can take the word of a criminal in the government, then they should be able to take the word of any criminals outside the government, right?
Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating that we should take the words of guilty criminals and just let the go free to commit more crimes. I’m only showing you that there seems to be this untouchable double standard in Washington, D.C. that benefits those in the government while the rest of us scratch our heads at the inconsistencies of being obedient to the laws of the land.
